The Institute re-envisions Stanislavsky’s System of actor training as a living legacy that continually adapts the timeless art of acting to the evolving conditions under which today’s actors work. Stanislavsky’s innovative rehearsal technique, Active Analysis—as practiced by his most prominent assistant, Maria Knebel—is the Institute’s cornerstone for this evolving legacy. The technique’s dynamic principles and improvisatory approach foster in actors the independence, spontaneity, and flexibility they need to work across media and in differing aesthetic styles from realism to postdramatic works and beyond.

THE IN-PERSON STUDIO

  • Sessions vary from several weeks to several months.
  • Each session takes on a particular topic in acting. Past topics have included scene study; auditioning techniques; acting professionally; the performance of classic plays; acting in post-modern and contemporary works, including new plays; and the devising of new content.
  • In-Person sessions are conducted on a rent share basis.
  • The length and topic of each session will be announced via email in advance of registration.
  • Most sessions culminate in an Open House performance.

THE ONLINE STUDIO

  • Meets on Saturday mornings (Pacific Standard Time) via the Internet.
  • Sessions vary from six to ten weeks.
  • Each session focuses on the principles and practice of Active Analysis through the use of dramatic texts in various styles.
  • A required contribution is set for participation in the Online Studio.
  • The length of each session will be announced via email in advance of registration.

  • Audits are available by appointment.

  • Periodically, the Stanislavsky Institute hosts discussions on topics of concern to actors.
  • Past topics have included working with Active Analysis in film and preparing for auditions.
